But there are varying degrees of success among those on LinkedIn, and the simple fact is that some job seekers are doing a much better job than others when it comes to getting exposure on the site. They're not engaging in complicated schemes, just plain proven ways to become more prominent.

Executive Coach's Tip: Say NO to Say Yes

Great leaders, top performers and high achievers are constantly receiving requests for their time. Their success and ability to get things done is like a powerful magnet ... drawing more and more requests toward them.

Learning to be SELECTIVE in what you say YES to is a key time management and productivity skill that highly effective leaders MUST master.

Saying "NO" can be difficult, particularly with respect to requests for things you LIKE to do or from people you feel you "OWE" some time to.

But remember this .... Saying "NO" to anything is saying "YES" to something else --- you WILL spend your time on SOMETHING, so make sure your choice in HOW you spend your time is in alignment with your personal and professional goals.

Try this today .... For the next week, track what you say "YES" to and note the following for EACH of those "Yes's":

1. What exactly did you say yes to (are you clear on the request)?
2. How much time and effort (in hours or days) are you committing to (including all preparation time)?
3. Why did you say "Yes" to the request -- what were the compelling reasons? ... and finally, 
4. What will you likely be saying "NO' to if you say "Yes" to the request -- what will you likely be giving up?

Tracking your "Yes's" and noting answers to the above will bring AWARENESS to the process and will help you make better choices and will enable you to be more selective going forward.

Executive Coach's Tip: Be the Early Bird

Great leaders are great role models.  People watch EVERYTHING you do .... they hear everything you say.  Be the one to SET THE STANDARD for others to follow.

It may seem like a small thing, but running late, even by just a couple of minutes sets a standard that others observe and follow.  Being punctual shows respect for others .... it shows you care, it tells "them" they're important.

Try this beginning today .... Arrive a few minutes early for EVERY meeting on your calendar, perhaps even 10 minutes early, and:

• Use that time to engage in dialogue with your colleagues and team mates
• Review the agenda
• Give your material a final review
• Make notes of important questions to ask

Be a role model .... set the standard for others. Show others YOU care and you respect their time.

Executive Coach's Tip: Make Feedback a Habit

Feedback .... in the world of business, is the breakfast of champions.  Feedback "feeds" us -- it's at the top of the food pyramid for learning and professional development.

How often do you ASK for feedback?

Feedback can be humbling, it can be eye-opening, it can bring awareness to us of things that we're simply "blind" to .... but, if we don't ask, we usually don't receive it -- particularly the constructive form.  Many or most people will give us positive feedback, but very few will give us honest, candid feedback focused on ... how we can improve ... on who we can get better ... on things we SHOULD change or do differently.

Make ASKING for feedback a habit.  Seek feedback from others:

• Following a meeting in which you participated
• After a presentation you've given
• In follow up to a networking event
• Anytime you're in front of others

Ask an observer -- a colleague, a friend, a peer, a direct report, a panel member, a participant:

• How you did, overall
• Was your message clear?
• Did you seem to listen well?
• Was your body language in alignment with your message?
• Did you seek input from others?
• Did you show respect for others' time?
• Did you leave a positive impression?
• Were you friendly?

Seeking feedback communicates a clear message that you CARE, that personal excellence is important to you, that learning and getting better is important to you.

Feedback is a highly effective learning tool, but like any other tool, if left in the toolbox, it does you NO good. Use it. Solicit feedback .... often.  Make feedback a HABIT.

Executive Coach's Tip: Be the First to Apologize

Holding onto the thought that you may have hurt someone's feelings, wasted their time in someway, said something you later regretted, or forgot to do something that you promised to do is mental space that should always be cleared.  Releasing negative or non-productive thoughts frees up your mind to focus on the good things, the positive things and the productive things that you can do to help yourself and help others.

Try this today .... Take the high road.  Consider any situations where you might have hurt someone's feelings or disappointed them in some way.  Then ... reach out to offer an apology.  No need to explain "the why" it happened or why you did what you did.  Just apologize ... A simple "I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. Please accept my apology, and I'll make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen again."

To whom can YOU offer an apology TODAY?  Take the time to make the call or to say it in person.  You'll feel better .... they'll feel better.

Executive Coach's Tip: Give Your UNDIVIDED Attention

We're ALL busy.  Our to do lists seem unending.  The urgent (or seemingly urgent) things are constantly tugging at us.  Distractions surround us -- email, the ringing phone, social media notifications, etc.  It's VERY difficult at times to FOCUS our attention on the important and CONCENTRATE on the matter at hand.

Try this today .... When a team mate or colleague approaches you with a question or for a discussion, give them your UNDIVIDED ATTENTION:

• STOP whatever you're doing
• Turn your HEAD and BODY toward them and look them in the eye
• Set down your mobile device -- your phone, your iPad, whatever
• Clear your mind, focus on THEM
• Listen; listen with interest

Do it out of respect for the individual .... Do it because YOU CARE .... Do it because it's the KIND thing to do.  Just do it.  

Give others your undivided attention today.

Executive Coach's Tip: OVER-DELIVER On Your Promises and Commitments

SATISFYING your clients, your manager, your team mates by getting things done on time and producing good work seems to be an acceptable goal to many.  

TOP PERFORMERS, however, go WAY beyond merely satisfying their constituents .... they consistently WOW them by OVER-DELIVERING on their promises and their commitments.  They clearly DISTINGUISH themselves from "the crowd" by doing MORE ... taking the extra step .... exceeding expectations .... putting "their stamp" on their work product.

Fully embrace the concept of over-delivering, and YOU will step into circle of high performers .... leaving a LASTING, enthusiastic impression of yourself on others .... creating advocates and raving fans.

Make OVER-DELIVERY a habit.  What specifically can you do TODAY to over-deliver on something you've commited to or promised?  Why not DO that -- whatever it is .... today?

Executive Coach's Tip: Tell THREE People Today That You Appreciate Them

Although I have gotten better at it over the years, I could still do a MUCH better job of telling others how I appreciate them. Saying "I appreciate you" to someone and then backing it up with telling them WHY can feel a bit uncomfortable .... perhaps because we simply don't PRACTICE it enough (by doing it on a regular basis). 

It DOES, however, FEEL GOOD once you do it .... and it's ALWAYS apparent that it makes the other person feel good.  It's really no different than giving them a gift, and giving feels good doesn't it?

Try this today .... write down the names of THREE PEOPLE you can CALL or who you expect to SEE today .... the goal being to USE YOUR VOICE to tell them that you appreciate them. 

Make sure you have clarity on the WHY -- being able to explain the REASON you appreciate them.

Now .... commit to DOING IT today.  Make it a point to reach out to at least one person in the next 10-15 minutes.  You'll make their day .... I guarantee it.

Executive Coach's Tip: Practice the "Courtesy Call" Habit

None of us have the luxury of wasting valuable work time.  Time. Is. Valuable.

Showing up for a meeting and then finding out your contact double-booked or forgot about the meeting is time-wasted that COULD HAVE been avoided.  Showing up for a meeting where the other party is not fully prepared CAN (and many times DOES) result in an unproductive meeting for BOTH of you which COULD also have been avoided.

Calling ahead is an ACT OF COURTESY. Calling head demonstrates YOU CARE .... you care about your time, you care about THEIR time .... and you care about the relationship.

Practice the COURTESY CALL habit -- Always call ahead or give a reminder notice for all of your appointments, particularly those requiring travel/commute time:

• At a minimum, send an email the day before the appointment to confirm time, place and agenda
• Call the day before or call the morning of an in-person appointment to confirm the meeting time, place and agenda/topic
• Leave a voice mail message if you're unable to connect in person
• Follow up with an email reminder if you're unable to connect in person

If you're running late for the appointment:

• ALWAYS call ahead if you know you're going to be more than 5 minutes late
• Alternatively, send a text message if you're going to be more than 5 minutes late
• If you're running more than 15 minutes behind, give the other party the option to reschedule if necessary
